Kusatsu (Station N°53).

This plate depicts a group of travellers and a retaurant. Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido. Japanese woodblock print from circa 1950, from Hiroshige (1797-1858). That beautiful woodblock reprint by the publisher Takamizawa, was done exactly as the originals.

An artist carved a woodblock, one for each color, and hand printed each print one color at a time. In the 1830's Hiroshige traveled from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. He immediately returned to Edo after the trip and began his masterwork woodblock series. Good condition.
